چکیده

Supplementary data Data processing 1. Topographic data Because the SRTM data are not continuous, we filled minor holes of a few pixels by interpolation and filled larger holes with 90-m elevation-adjusted Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED). For the remaining regions with missing topographic information, we used digital elevation models (DEMs) created from stereo-views of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER).

Towards a complete Himalayan hydrological budget : The spatiotemporal distribution of 1 snowmelt and rainfall and their impact on river discharge

7 The hydrological budget of Himalayan rivers is dominated by monsoonal rainfall and 8 snowmelt, but their relative impact is not well established. Current knowledge of rainfall and 9 snow-cover distribution is unreliable because this remote region lacks a dense gauge network. 10 Here, we use a combination of remotely-sensed climate parameters that have been both 11 calibrated and validated to ...

Toward a complete Himalayan hydrological budget: Spatiotemporal distribution of snowmelt and rainfall and their impact on river discharge

[1] The hydrological budget of Himalayan rivers is dominated by monsoonal rainfall and snowmelt, but their relative impact is not well established because this remote region lacks a dense gauge network. Here, we use a combination of validated remotely‐sensed climate parameters to characterize the spatiotemporal distribution of rainfall, snowfall, and evapotranspiration in order to quantify thei...

Impact of transient groundwater storage on the discharge of 1 Himalayan rivers 2 3

16 17 The transfer of precipitation into rivers involves temporary water storage in reservoirs 1,2 such as 18 soils, groundwater, snow and glaciers, where different residence times influence the hydrological 19 cycle. In the central Himalayas, the water budget is considered to be primarily controlled by 20 monsoon rainfall, snow and glacier melt 3,4 , and secondarily by evapotranspiration 3. Th...

Using Remotely-sensed Precipitation and Glacial Velocities as Climatic Indicators in the Himalaya

The Himalaya and adjacent Tibetan Plateau are the source of several major Asian rivers supporting a large, diverse ecosystem and a population of more than 1 billion people [Ives and Messerli, 1989; Barnett et al., 2005]. Large rivers such as the Indus, Sutlej, Ganges, Arun, and Brahmaputra/Tsangpo draining the southern Tibetan Plateau and the Himalaya are essential for agriculture and energy ge...
